Join us for a fabulous night of music that cuts a broad swath through the creative ferment of the 1920s and '30s, the years between the two World Wars. American roots music virtuosos Eric and Suzy Thompson perform music of the rural South, followed by Disciples of Markos, playing rembetika songs from from the hazy dens of the 1930s Greek underworld, with special guests Hank Bradley (bouzouki) and Cathie Whitesides (violin) along for the ride.
Tonight, Eric and Suzy present a broad palette of tunes from their new CD, Dream Shadows, on which the pair continue their long-standing love affair with Southern music at the intersection of country blues, string band music, and Cajun songs. Eric's flatpicking on guitar and mandolin is exceptional for its purity of tone, speed, and soulfulness; Suzy is a powerful singer, an award-winning fiddler and Cajun accordion player who has apprenticed with older generation Louisiana Cajun musicians under an NEA Fellowship. Founding members of many influential roots music groups, including Any Old Time String Band, the Klezmorim, the Bluegrass Intentions, and the California Cajun Orchestra, Eric and Suzy have also worked with Jerry Garcia, Maria Muldaur, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, and many other fine musicians.
The Disciples of Markos transport their listeners to the back-alley Greek bars of the 1930s with rembetika, which they describe as "The music of dopers, thieves, whores, and all sorts of unsavory characters." Dinos Demakos (vocals, glass, bouzouki), Dmitri Mavra (bouzouki, santouri), Debbie Bernakis (baglama), Allegra Legopoulos (guitar), Jiorgos Roulemos (tzoura), and Kosmos Gervisis (accordion, violin, baglama, glass) play the "Greek blues" in the style of Markos Vamvakaris, the most famous singer, songwriter and bouzouki player of the 1930s, joined tonight by Freight favorites Hank Bradley on bouzouki and Cathie Whitesides on violin.
