Formed in 1998 by southern Italian trumpet artist Cesare Dell'Anna, Opa Cupa is a musical shout of exultation and a powerful invitation to get up and dance! Set in time to the dances of southeastern European gypsies, the group's music blends a whole kaleidoscope of styles, from the local music of Cesare's native Salento, Italy to Balkan brass band traditions. Ever-conscious of the roots of the music but also open to the influences of jazz and contemporary pop, the group provides a remarkable evening of Balkan Gypsy jazz at its best.
Opa Cupa (that's pronounced "opa tzupa") features Cesare on trumpet, bassist Michele Minerva, Mauro Tre on keyboards, and percussionist Sergio Quagliarella. For tonight's show, this quartet is joined by sultry vocalist Eva Salina Primack (Slavic Soul Party), violinist Fabrice Martinez and vocalist Ursula Knudson, both of the beloved world music band Fishtank Ensemble. plus Djordje Stijepovic on upright bass.
