Hailing from the mountains of Emilia Romagna in northern Italy, youthful
quartet Fiamma Fumana pays tribute to Italian womens singing traditions
by updating them with electronic dance music. The result is an alluring,
layered sound, and an intriguing blend of old Italian songs (like those sung
by the mondine, rice gatherers who were all young girls) and tunes played
to new Italian dance grooves, traditional ballads and state-of-the art
electronica.
Formed in 1999 by a diverse group of musicians who shared
a love for the musical traditions of Emilia Romagna, Fiamma Fumana
features the beautiful singing of Fiamma Orlandi, who was brought up
musically in the Emilian countryside by her grandmother and great-
grandmother; Alberto Cottica, an accordionist, guitarist, and pianist well-
known in the Italian folk-rock music scene; Jessica Lombardi on Emilian
bagpipes, flutes, and electric bass; and the Italian-Eritrean dj, Medhin
Paolos.
Fiamma Fumana's most recent album, Home (Omnium),
showcases the group's adventurous layering of ancient and new sounds,
weaving in the voices of old-timers and decorating folk tunes with
danceable electronic beats.
