A jazz singer with a distinctive vision, Molly Holm blends straight-ahead
jazz with North Indian raga singing, Brazilian bossa nova, the experimental
textures of freely improvised music, and even American pop songs. In her
performances, Molly draws on 25 years of collaborative solo and ensemble
experience, including work with some of the best artists in jazz, world
music, and beyond, including Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra, Terry Riley's
Khayal, and Zakir Hussain's S.F. Jazz Festival commission, "Rapt No
Strings."
For tonight's performance, which spotlights original
compositions as well as adding interesting twists to a diverse set of jazz
standards, Molly brings together an exceptional rhythm section led by
pianist Frank Martin, the "king of odd-metered arrangements." Also
featured will be trombonist, arranger, and Afro-Cuban aficionado, Wayne
Wallace, and drummer, Deszon Claiborne.
