Renowned for his technique, innovation, and compelling compositions, Bay Area-based Alex de Grassi is one of the world's top fingerstyle, steel-string acoustic guitarists. He established himself as a guitarist and composer in the late 1970s with his classic recording, Turning Back (Windham Hill), which Acoustic Guitar magazine recently cited as one of the top ten "essential fingerstyle recordings" of all time.
Since then, Alex has expanded his repertoire to include interpretations of jazz classics and folk melodies from around the world. Driven by a unique sense of composition, each of his intricate pieces is a tapestry that weaves melody, counter-melody, bass, harmony, rhythm, and cross-rhythms into a unified whole.
Alex's recent album, Now and Then: Folk Songs for the 21st Century (Tropo), is a collection of traditional American melodies like "Oh Susanna" and "Streets of Laredo" arranged to reflect a multicultural landscape, incorporating elements of samba, R&B, and even urban hip-hop beats.
