the great medieval love story in words & music
Door 7:30pm, Music 8:00pm | Purchase advance tickets: $18.50

It was a dark and stormy night in medieval Europe. And the legend being told was the greatest of all legends, The Romance of Tristan and Iseult. Filled with love, passion, magic, and death, it captivated the audience because it was the very mirror of their own hearts, minds and souls. (There is even a ring of power in the story, for God's sake.) And to raise the telling beyond the power of words there was music: the vielle, the harp, the drum, the psaltery, and the singing voice. All this made for an evening of enchantment many centuries ago. We hope it will do the same on a portentous night in Berkeley in our own Dark Age. One of the premier Celtic harp players in the world, as well as a captivating storyteller in the Irish tradition, Patrick Ball blends the glorious tones of the wire-strung harp and spoken-word magicianship into rich theatrical performances. Shira Kammen, acclaimed for her graceful playing in early and traditional music ensembles including Panacea and Fortune's Wheel, performs tonight on fiddle, vielle (a precursor of the violin), medieval harp, and vocals. Percussionist Peter Maund has recorded and performed widely in Europe and North America, in groups including Ensemble Alcatraz, Davka, and Alasdair Frasers Skyedance. An acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and singer, Tim Rayborn has devoted much of his musical activity over the past years to the research and performance of medieval European music: tonight he performs on lute, psaltery (an ancestor of the dulcimer and zither), medieval harp, kantele (Finnish lap harp), and vocals.
