w/ hammered dulcimer masters Michael Masley & Jamie Janover and bassist Jim Prescott

Chances are that at some point or another while passing the main entrance to the Berkeley BART station, your ears and imagination have been tantalized by the ethereal music of hammered dulcimer master, and occasional street performer, Michael Masley. Michael invented a way to tempt an amazing palette of tones from this ancient precursor to the piano by adding horsehair strings to the mallets traditionally used to strike the dulcimer's strings and attaching them to four fingers of each hand, creating "bow hammers," which enable him to pluck, bow and strike the strings simultaneously. He has recorded with artists as diverse as Ry Cooder, Tom Waits, and Zakir Hussain. Jamie Janover has been playing the drums since an early age, and so has developed a unique style of playing the hammered dulcimer based on percussive techniques; anyone who has heard him take on Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun," or sit in with everyone from Phish to String Cheese Incident, can tell you he is also an innovator extraordinaire. Two years ago the two began a collaboration that included the release of an eponymously named album, that became a favorite listening piece, heard often on National Public Radio's program All Things Considered. Join us tonight as Michael and Jamie, alias All Strings Considered, produce a marvellous, lush web of sounds, tones and melodies that seem to have no musical boundaries, from cascading symphonies of percussive tones to moments of wonderfully dreamy ambiance. A further dimension will be added to the timbral mix on the Freight stage, with the inclusion of upright bassist Jim Prescott, of G. Love and Special Sauce fame.
