Pianist and composer Ellen Hoffman will be joined by vocalist Anna DeLeon and saxophonist Melecio Magdaluyo for an evening of solos, duos and trios. Ellen's background is jazz, classical, popular, and music theatre, with a dash of ragtime, a touch of the blues, ten years playing with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and the past four years with the Berkeley Broadway Singers -- so there is no telling what may emerge. The trio ventures into uncharted territory, with premieres of Ellen's original compositions with lyrics by Bay Area post-Beat word stylist Jimmy Lyons. Ellen's solo piano excursions will include songs by Rodgers & Hart and Lennon & McCartney. This is Ellen's first venture as a headliner at the Freight, but by no means her first time performing here. For many years, she was a regular at the original building on San Pablo Avenue, playing piano with vocal ensemble Oak, Ash & Thorn. |
