Two top guitar virtuosos from Hawai'i, Barry Flanagan, formerly of HAPA and Makana, slack key master, slam into the California coast for a musical exhibition and performance straight from the heart and soul of the islands.
Barry is one of the world's great guitarists and Hawai'i's finest songwriters. He has penned some of the most cherished songs in the islands, including the award winning "Lei Pikake" and "Ku'u Lei, Ku'uipo". His performance and writing with, and producing and recording of HAPA birthed enduring melodies, debuts in the top ten of World Music Charts, and record sales for Hawaiian contemporary music. Barry continues expanding his song craftsmanship and guitar mastery in his current works. His delivery of inspired songs is moving, healing and not to be missed at any chance.
Makana is a musical world time traveler. He takes a foundation of Hawaiian slack key guitar and builds in influences of folk, rock, ethnic, classical, jazz, traditional and ambient music. The result is innovation and the charting of new sonic frontiers with deep ties to tradition. His gentle to commanding arrangements all reflect his own style and character, while carrying forward the spirit of Hawai'i. Music lovers and guitar enthusiasts are simultaneously accommodated.
Brace yourselves...
Barry and Makana are friends with deep mutual appreciation. Together they have chosen some of their favorites, traditional and original, to share with intimate audiences. They anchor and inspire each other's contemporary Hawaiian guitar playing to new heights and musical places. Exploring, conjuring and transporting-- to past and future, familiar and foreign, dream-like to moving.
There music is representative of and based on Ki Ho'alu, or "slacked key" guitar, an indigenous Hawaiian art form older than the blues. Playing both rhythm and melody simultaneously with intricate right-hand techniques in open tunings, slack key players are versatile and evocative. Tunings were often handed down by masters and are sometimes particular to a single song.
Whether instrumental or with Hawaiian vocals, Barry and Makana combine their talents for guitar with love of Hawai'i, land, people and culture. They each show some of the best Hawai'i has to offer in slack key and world-class guitar styling. Together they unlock the feel, fun and beauty found across generations in Hawaiian backyards and beach fronts around sunset and well into the evening. Music that tells stories and paints pictures, making friends and special times. Aloha
