Senegalese singer, guitarist, and percussionist Henri-Paul Koubaka promises to "transport the entire audience to a moonlight gathering in West Africa" with this evening of ancient and contemporary Mandingo music from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Congo. Playing both solo and in ensemble, Henri-Pierre brings us the intricate melodies and polyrhythms of this beautiful, passionate music, performing songs of praise, struggle, and hope with instruments ranging from the ancient to the contemporary: expect his guitar, calabash, and shakers to be joined by various drums and balafon (African xylophone), as well as violin and saxophone. Perhaps best known to Bay Area dwellers from his radio shows on KPFA and KALW, Henri-Paul grew up in a musical family, and spent his earlier years playing in various bands and working as a DJ in Dakar before coming to San Francisco. In integrating elements from diverse musical backgrounds and firmly rooting it all in his deep musical heritage, Henri-Paul creates music that's uplifting in all senses of the word -- just try to stay in your seat!
