Golden Bough -- Paul Espinoza, Margie Butler, and Kathy Sierra -- celebrates Celtic New Year, performing haunting ballads, beautiful airs, and lively songs of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. Tonight, the group premieres pieces added to its repertoire as a result of an intense period spent in Galicia, Spain researching the Celtic music of that province. Galicia is one of the few areas in continental Europe that has been able to maintain its Celtic culture. With melodies similar to Irish and Scottish music, the Galician music also incorporates the rhythms of Spain, giving it an exceptional flavor of its own. With pristine harmony, backed by Celtic harp, pennywhistle, violin, guitar, accordion, mandolin, and bodhrán (Celtic hand drum), the Bay Area-based trio has traveled throughout the world and has released 11 albums, most recently Songs of the Celts. |
