innovative acoustic string duo

Darol Anger and Mike Marshall offer up an inimitable, ebullient, and fascinating brand of folk-jazz-classical music, exploring musical worlds stretching from Brazil through the Appalachian hills to Europe and Africa, by way of Manhattan and Florida swamps. Darol Anger and Mike Marshall began working together in 1978 when they were both members of the David Grisman Quintet. Since those days, these leading proponents of American acoustic string music have worked together in duo recordings and performances as well as with the folk-jazz fusion group Montreux, and the avant garde bluegrass quintet Psychograss. Violinist, fiddler, composer, producer and educator, Darol also developed and popularized new techniques for playing contemporary styles on string instruments with the jazz-oriented Turtle Island String Quartet, where his fertile inventiveness, surprising touches, and technical mastery were often in the forefront. After his work with Darol in both the Grisman Quintet and Montreux, multi-string-instrumentalist Mike founded the Modern Mandolin Quartet, worked with bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer and banjo wizard Béla Fleck on the album Uncommon Ritual (Sony), and formed the group Choro Famoso to play the Brazilian music in which he is deeply interested.
