Phil Marsh is on hand as we bid a fond farewell to our west Berkeley environs and prepare for our move to 2020 Addison Street in the heart of Berkeley's downtown arts district later this month. Phil sang and picked his guitar with the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band at the Freight & Salvage on its 1968 opening night. He also performed with the street theater ensemble, the East Bay Sharks, was musical director for the Pickle Family Circus, wrote songs for the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and helped create the Masked Marauders superstar spoof album, a great collection of anonymous, original rock songs that had even Rolling Stone magazine fooled into believing that Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, and John Lennon were responsible for the recording session. (This classic recording was recently released as a CD by Rhino Records.)
Now a club, concert hall, and studio performer in New York City, Phil is returning to Berkeley for our final Saturday night at 1111 Addison and will stay long enough to help us inaugurate our new home on during the latter part of the month. Phil closes one loop and helps us open another, as he ranges from folk and country to blues and originals including at least one of his classic "sensitive guy, self-pitying extravaganzas," joined by a host of special guests.
