With their haunting tone and rich complexity, the uilleann (bellows) pipes have had a profound influence on Ireland's musical heritage. Direct from Ireland, tonight's multi-media performance takes the audience on an in-depth exploration of the beguiling instrument that has been central to so much well-known Irish music, from the Chieftains to Planxty to Riverdance. Presented by Na Piobairi Uilleann (the association of uilleann pipers based in Dublin, Ireland), Piperlink features an introduction by one of Ireland's best-known traditional singers, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, a history of the instrument narrated by piping expert Seán Donnelly, and performances by two leading pipers, Tommy Keane and Gay McKeon.
Best known for her work with Irish supergroup Danu, Muireann is a richly expressive vocalist and an extremely talented flute and whistle player in the vibrant West Kerry traditions of wild dance tunes and soulful airs. Born in Dublin, Seán has spent the past few decades contributing articles on piping and other aspects of Irish music to academic journals. Currently residing in Galway, Tommy has performed and recorded with many of the legends of Irish music, including Tommy McCarthy, Ralph McTell, Clannad, and The Pogues. Gay studied with the renowned piper and pipe maker Leo Rowsome; he has recorded and toured with artists including Christy Moore, Maddy Prior, and June Tabor.
