Peter Rowan returns to the Freight stage for an evening of remarkable music with his hot bluegrass band.

A brilliant songwriter, soulful singer, and superb guitar and mandolin player fluent in any number of genres, Peter has long been a revolutionary force in bluegrass, making the old homestead ring with surprising new sounds. Peter began his professional career in the mid-1960s when he left his native Massachusetts to sing lead and play guitar with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. In the 1970s he settled in the Bay Area, where he performed and recorded with rock-fusion innovators Seatrain, formed the ground-breaking bluegrass group Old and in the Way with David Grisman and Jerry Garcia, and played rock and bluegrass with the Free Mexican Airforce with Flaco Jimenez on accordion. More recently, Peter’s been playing a lot with flat-picking guitar innovator Tony Rice, on stage and CDs like Quartet (Rounder).

Joining Peter on stage tonight are mandolin master and Grammy nominee, Jody Stecher, banjo great Keith Little, most recently seen on our stage with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience. Peter, Jody, and Keith forming the three-part vocal nucleus of the group with powerhouse bassist Paul Knight, a veteran musician who has played with Laurie Lewis, Sandy Rothman and many others.
