Come enjoy an evening of great music for a great cause! Three top guitarists and numerous special guests take the Freight stage in a benefit concert for famed local social justice advocate Carol Denney, who is facing legal difficulties that may result in losing her home. In addition to the stunning playing of David Cronin, Estéban Bello, and Peppino D'Agostino, we get to hear invigorating political tunes from Carol herself, as well as a few folk rock numbers from the duo FenderCronin. And who knows who else might show up? (You definitely should.)
Twelve-string guitar artist David has played as a solo act and as a member of a number of bands, including the infamous Jazz Bums. He also performs with his wife, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Jami Fender-Cronin, as a thought-provoking folk rock duo.
Estéban performs music of great beauty and virtuosity in a number of very different styles, moving freely from classical and jazz to flamenco and Latin American. Known in some cirlces as Stephen Bell, he is also an expressive vocalist, performing songs in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, with superb guitar accompaniment.
Praised by Guitar Player magazine for "the poetry and elegance of his bouyant, graceful compositions," Italian-born steel string guitarist (and frequent Freight performer) Peppino combines technical prowess with a rich, lyrical approach. Dynamic rhythms, unconventional tunings, and evocative melodies mark Peppino's compositions, and he's known for his distinctive method of playing the fretboard with the left hand while simultaneously creating percussive effects with the right. He was also voted Best Acoustic Guitarist by the readers of Guitar Player magazine in its 2007 Reader's Choice Awards!
A tireless social justice advocate and a political singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Carol Denney has regaled the Freight audience with many an enlightening evening over the past few decades. Winner of the East Bay Express' readers' poll for "Best Solo Performer" in 2002, the following year Carol received an award from the City of Berkeley's Commission on the Status of Women for civil liberties activism through music, humor, and art.
