Four impressively talented sisters—Fiona, Mairi, Amy, and Kirsty Johnson—bring a breath of fresh air to the Freight with their youthful energy and beguiling blend of traditional and contemporary Scottish tunes.
Fiona (fiddle, vocals, guitar, piano, and whistles), Kirsty (piano, accordion, and vocals), Amy (drums and accordion), and Mairi (piano, keyboards, vocals, and bass) were raised in a highly musical family; all of them started studying music between the ages of four and six. They formed the group GiveWay in 1998 to showcase the powerful combination of their skills, and have been blazing a bright trail ever since. Their airtight, harmony-drenched arrangements of haunting traditional airs and lively jigs, energetic folk-jazz blends, and contemporary songs have gained them a growing following as well as awards at the famed Celtic Connections festival and at the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards.
Tonight, GiveWay spotlights numbers from their recent CD Inspired, a collection spanning traditional Irish and Scottish tunes, rock-inspired jigs, and songs written by icons like Phil Cunningham and John McCusker.
