John Schott's Dream Kitchen +3
w/ Suzy Thompson, Bob Mielke & Richard Hadlock

Thursday, November 2, 2006
rough and rowdy jazz ensemble presents the music of Ferdinand Lamothe, aka "Jelly Roll Morton"
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $17.50

John Schott's Dream Kitchen returns to the Freight, performing the compelling music of Jelly Roll Morton. Tonight's show features a very special expanded lineup, with two local legends of traditional jazz -- trombone legend Bob Mielke and famed reedman Richard Hadlock -- plus beloved Freight artist Suzy Thompson. Led by guitarist extraordinaire, John, Dream Kitchen features John Hanes (Henry Kaiser, Chrome) on drums and Marc Bolin (Marcus Shelby, Realistic Orchestra) on tuba and bass trombone.

John's varied career has taken him from Grammy-nominated jazz-funk with T.J. Kirk, to outer-space classical music with the Paul Dresher Ensemble, to the serious study of turn-of-the-century old-time music with his Hootenanny band. With twenty records on labels big (Warner Bros.) and small (Tzadik, Songlines, New World) and appearances in venues ranging from CBGB's to the Lincoln Center, John's an eclectic and restless musician. But the baseline is a passion for straight-up, from-the-gut roots guitar playing: slide, fingerstyle, and deep blues.

With Dream Kitchen, John turns to the jazz of the 1920s, not to "deconstruct" or to "preserve," but simply to present these amazing compositions with as much groove, energy, and high spirits as is socially permissible!
