"hypno-folkadelic ambient-trad" from Scotland's roots/rave legends
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $19.50

"Acid ceilidh," "cool celt," and "hypnofolkadelic acid croft music" are but a few of the phrases folks have come up with in attempting to describe the sound of Shooglenifty, an Edinburgh-based band known for taking West Highland musical traditions and hurling them headlong towards the 21st century. ("Shoogle" means "shake" in the old Scottish vernacular, if that helps.) With a heady mix of vivid melodies, acoustic instrumental fire, deep grooves, and digital effects, the sextet's music combines Celtic roots music with a broad array of rhythmic influences both ancient and modern and from points around the globe.

The band's members, including veterans of Capercaillie and Mouth Music, include Garry Finlayson on banjo and electric banjo, bassist Quee Macarthur, Luke Plumb on mandolin, fiddler Angus R. Grant, Malcolm Crosbie on acoustic and electric guitars, and James Mackintosh on drums, percussion, and piano. They recently followed up the live CD, Radical Mestizo, with a new studio album, The Eccentric, but as any Shooglenifty fan will tell you, they must be seen live. Melodious traditional reels segue into edgy, genre-spanning improvisation and deliriously danceable grooves with incendiary results...Don't miss them!
