Soaring, powerful harmonies, compelling original songs, and supple
instrumental prowess add spice and soul to the tasty concoction of
bluegrass, country and rock dished up tonight by the Nashville-based
ensemble known as 3 Fox Drive.
The three Fox siblings from upstate
New York's Adirondack Mountains -- guitarist and vocalist Kim, Scruggs-style
banjo player Joel and vocalist Barb -- established themselves on the
northeastern bluegrass circuit in the late 1980s as The Fox Family. Known
for their intricate vocal work and for Kim's stunning songwriting, they were
nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA)
Emerging Artist of the Year award in 1997. Having subsequently relocated to
Nashville, and with three additional band members -- mandolinist Jim Reed
(Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, String Therapy), bassist Mike Anglin (Lonesome
Standard Time, Continental Divide), and Bay Area native, fiddler Megan Lynch
(Due West, Jim Hurst) -- they're a tightly knit ensemble of rare musical
empathy that animates everything they play, whether it be one of Kim's
gorgeous originals, a traditional breakdown, or an exploration into
unconventional territory like their great cover of the Doobie Brothers'
"Listen to the Music," the title track of their latest album.
