World-renowned Berkeley troubadour, Country Joe McDonald, returns to our stage to introduce his new band and to raise funds for Easy Does It Disability Assistance, a local nonprofit that provides emergency attendant care and transportation for Berkeleyites with severe physical disabilities.
As a Vietnam-era sailor, folk singer, anti-war activist, rock music icon, advocate for environmental and veterans' causes, and a respected scholar of the history of nursing, Joe has been a substantial figure on the landscape of American culture for the past four decades.
In the 1960s, his band, Country Joe and the Fish was renowned for performing at demonstrations against the war in Vietnam and for its music that became a staple of college, progressive, and underground radio stations -- not to mention for its infamous "fish cheer." Last year, Joe and members of that group formed the Country Joe Band, releasing the album Live in Berkeley, which was recorded at the Freight.
Over the past few decades, Joe has continued to bring his music to audiences world-wide and has released more than 30 albums, while continuing to be a powerful advocate for the issues close to his heart. Don't miss this opportunity to catch Joe as he joins us for this very special benefit concert, joined by drummer Michael Borbridge, Freddie Roulette on slide electric steel guitar, and Michael Warren on electric bass.
