These dudes play like a burning barn, writes Warren Argo for the Seattle
Folklore Society; "The blend of passion and technical expertise is obvious
and wonderful."
Fueled by the fresh, strikingly modern approach
to traditional Irish and Scottish music which has become their hallmark,
dynamic Seattle-based fiddler Jamie Laval and German guitarist Hans York
are building quite a reputation with their subtle, complex blend of
tradition with influences from ethnic styles around the
world.
Winner of the 2002 United States National Scottish Fiddle
Championship, Jamie infuses the rich traditions with vigorous energy and
a cosmopolitan sensibility informed by his time spent playing with
classical, jazz, and folk music groups. Hans's powerful performance style
is rooted in his years of professional experience in jazz, alternative rock,
Latin music, and American folk music. Using the unconventional DADGAD
tuning, Hans creates a broad palate of gorgeous harmonies and innovative
textures.
Tonight Jamie and Hans showcase tunes from their
recent album, Shades of Green, plus plenty of brand new gems, in an
exuberant performance running the gamut from tender to melancholy to
jubilant.
On Sunday, November 20, at 10:30 am, Jamie Laval
Celtic Fiddle Styles Workshop -- intermediate and advanced players
welcome for this rare opportunity to learn from a master.
