Imagine a mixture of high-energy alternative folk music with a country twang, infectious melodies, intelligent lyrics, and a somewhat eccentric stage manner, and with any luck you are somewhere near the quirky territory staked out by Nerissa Nields. Familiar to Freightgoers from her duo appearances with her sister Katryna (currently taking a break from singing due to throat problems), Nerissa launched her musical career in the New England coffee house circuit in the early 1990s, where the folk-rock-art band, the Nields, became one of the best-loved indie acts of that decade.
More recently, Nerissa has been producing a series of young adult books with companion "soundtrack" albums: this month she released the book/CD Plastic Angel. Like last year's This Town is Wrong, the project pushes Nerissa into intriguing new territory that combines the spunk of her earliest work with the sure-footed, sadder-but-wiser qualities of her more recent efforts.
Singer-songwriter, Kyler England, opens.
