After nearly four decades on the scene, Fairport Convention could definitely be termed one of the great English musical institutions, and they recently won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio Folk Awards to prove it. Formed in 1967, Fairport revolutionized British folk music by melding it with rock, exposing a whole generation to England's musical heritage while at the same time creating a new musical genre.

While the years have seen a number of personnel changes (past members have included Richard Thompson, Ian Matthews, and the late Sandy Denny, among many others), the band has continued to make great music, its top-notch musicianship and its link with England's rural traditions providing continuity through the decades.

As featured on their new album, Over the Next Hill, the current Fairport line-up includes three strong vocalists: singer/guitarist (and founding member) Simon Nicol, bassist Dave Pegg, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Leslie, with violinist Ric Sanders and drummer Gerry Conway adding fire and spice to the impressive instrumental mesh. Between them they tackle anything from fiery fiddle duos to thoughtful self-penned ballads and traditional favorites like "Banks of the Sweet Primroses," all with the great humor and finesse of true folk veterans. No wonder they are still around.
