The Devil Makes Three toys with the boundaries of acoustic music, mixing
styles from the ragtime and country music of the '20s and '30s with the
rock and roll and punk music of their adolescence. With influences as
varied as Steve Earle, the Reverend Gary Davis, Memphis Jug Band, and
Django Reinhardt, the band combines captivating songwriting, tight
vocal harmonies, fingerstyle guitar, and a fiery attitude to create an
exciting and original sound which avoids camp or cliches in favor of a spiky
edge.
Over the past few years, the trio has released a couple
ofCDs (most recently Longjohns, Boots, and a Belt), played up and
down the West Coast, and has shared bills with Robert Earl Keen and Paul
Thorn. Fast friends since their childhood in rural Vermont, Pete Bernhard
(guitar), Lucia Turino (upright bass), and Cooper McBean (guitar, tenor
banjo) are now based in Santa Cruz.
