San Francisco guitarist Teja Gerken presents an album release show
spotlighting his new CD, Postcards, joined by his six-string steel-
string guitar, 12-string guitar, and classical guitar, as well as some of our
other favorite Bay Area fingerstyle guitarists/composers. Special guests
Steve Baughman, Patrick Francis, Pete Madsen, and Dale Miller, each of
whom has a tune featured on Teja's new CD, will join the German-born
steel-string fingerstylist for an evening of great music -- mostly solos with
a few duets -- acoustic camaraderie, and guitars, guitars, guitars!
Weaving together influences of folk, jazz, classical, and world
music into a seamless style that is uniquely his own, Tejas playing
reflects his diverse musical interests. Many of his compositions employ
alternate tunings, two-handed tapping, and percussive effects; others
simply rely on his keen sense of melody and movement. Teja's repertoire,
while focusing on his fiery originals, is augmented by Irish traditionals, the
occasional jazz standard, and improvisations on themes by classical
composers. Of his 1999 debut album, On My Way, the music
review website Listen.com admiringly remarked, "This sounds as if Michael
Hedges, Paco De Lucia, and Bill Monroe are all fighting over a guitar." An
active participant in the vibrant Bay Area acoustic music scene, Teja is a
regular performer at many of the regions venues, and has shared the
stage with guitar visionaries such as John Renbourn, Alex de Grassi, and
Peter Finger.
