Come have a natchul ball with John Schott's Dream Kitchen, featuring the blues stomps and rags of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, W.C. Handy, and more. Guitar ace John (on acoustic, electric, and resonator guitars as well as vocals) is joined for some serious fun by Marc Bolin on tuba and bass trombone and percussionist John Hanes, not to mention special guests Richard Hadlock on soprano sax and clarinet and Suzy Thompson on violin.
John Schott's varied career has taken him from the Grammy-nominated jazz-funk of T.J. Kirk, to the outer-space classical music of the Paul Dresher Ensemble, to the serious study of turn-of-the-century old-time music with his Hootenanny band. With twenty records on labels big (Warner Bros.) and small (Tzadik, Songlines, New World) and appearances in venues ranging from CBGB's to the Blue Note, John's an eclectic and restless musician. But the bass line is a passion for straight-up, from-the-gut roots guitar playing: slide, fingerstyle, and deep blues.
With Dream Kitchen he turns to the Jazz of the twenties, reaching back to Scott Joplin and looking forward to Duke Ellington. Not looking to "deconstruct" or to "preserve," the mission is simply to present these amazing compositions with as much groove energy and high spirits as is socially permissable!
