Guitarist Carlos Oliveira, with his dynamic style and tropically rich compositions, introduces listeners to a new world of festive Brazilian music far beyond samba and bossa nova. His band, Brazilian Origins, performs original jazz based on folkloric rhythms rarely heard beyond the dance halls, street markets, and festivals of Carlos's native Recife, in a region of northeastern Brazil that is rich in African influences. At age 13, Carlos set himself to master all forms of Brazilian music, later adding classical training and a continuing exploration of jazz. Brazilian Origins evolved from Carlos's long-term musical partnership with virtuoso reed player Harvey Wainapel, who joins Carlos along with an all-star cast of Brazilian players.
