Compadres Peter Rowan and Don Edwards regale the Freight with songs from their recent Grammy-nominated duo album High Lonesome Cowboy (Shanachie), a groundbreaking celebration of the common roots of bluegrass and western music. Dig out those spurs and hightail it over to hear bluegrass legend Peter and premier cowboy troubadour Don perform an amazing collection of songs, from plaintive chestnuts like "I'm Going to Leave Old Texas Now" and "Take Me Back to the Range" and round-'em-up rousers like "The Old Chisholm Trail" (complete with "ki yi yippies"), to the upbeat Carter Family number "Buddies in the Saddle". Peter, an incomparable composer, singer, and guitar and mandolin player, began his professional career in the mid-1960s singing lead and playing guitar with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys before setting off on various musical explorations, including solo work and playing with ground-breaking groups like Old and in the Way with David Grisman and Jerry Garcia. Singer, folklorist, three-time winner of the Cowboy Hall of Fame Western Heritage Wrangler Award, Don captures the authenticity of the songs with his spare guitar work and his rich baritone voice. Together, the two push the songs into a whole new dimension, a mystical Western terrain populated by the mythical folks of one of our richest sources of folkloric music.
