all-star Brazilian roots quintet

Guitarist Carlos Oliveira, with his dynamic style and tropically rich compositions, introduces listeners to a new world of festive Brazilian music far beyond samba and bossa nova. His five-piece band, Ventos do Brasil, performs original jazz based on such folkloric rhythms as baiao, frevo, xote, and embolada, which are rarely heard beyond the dance halls, street markets, and festivals of Carlos's native Recife, in a region of northeastern Brazil that is rich in African influences. At age 13, Carlos set himself to master all forms of Brazilian music, later adding classical training and a continuing exploration of jazz. Ventos do Brasil evolved from Carlos's long-term musical partnership with virtuoso reed player Harvey Wainapel. Carlos and Harvey are joined in the quintet by percussionists Claudio Bebianno and Emiliano Benevides, and Rafael Lima on bass. "Much of Brazil's music is based on dance forms," warns Carlos: "You may find your feet acting up in new ways while enjoying Ventos do Brasil!"
