Tonight three leading country roots and folk artists back each other as they share an evening of original songs. Direct and beautiful, elegant, gutsy, or sunny, Carol McComb's music is at ease in a range that covers gentle love songs, classic country, bluegrass, and swing. That quintessential traditional music performer Jody Stecher, recently offered this appraisal: "In Carol's music there is grace and refinement that approaches the angelic. Her singing, playing, composing, and arranging are all of a piece and suffused with intelligence and love. Perhaps the unique beauty of her music is due in part to the union of her steadfast faithfulness to her creative vision and the ancient traditions that are in her bones." Carol recorded her first solo album, Love Can Take You Home Again, in the 1970s, and toured and recorded with the renowned Gryphon Quintet throughout the 1980s. In 2000 she released Little Bit of Heaven, a brilliant album that pays homage to Carol's musical roots with bluegrass tunes, a tribute to Maybelle Carter, Celtic arrangements, western swing, plenty of contemporary folk, and lots of gorgeous vocal harmony. Virginia-based Carol Elizabeth Jones blends contemporary themes with traditional Appalachain instrumental styles to bring a refreshing but familiar quality to her original songs. From foot-stomping Appalachian fiddle tunes to tender, catchy portraits of love and life, Carol Elizabeth's unique combination of traditional mountain, country roots music and finely crafted, thoroughly modern songs enchant and enthrall. Carol Elizabeth has released two albums with her former partner, James Leva, including, Journey Home. A native son of California's Sierra Nevada foothills, Keith Little began working the bluegrass circuit as a teenager. His hard-charging banjo, guitar, and vocals were integral to top flight west coast groups such as High Country and the Vern Williams Band (where he and Vern's son, Delbert Williams, met). Making his way to Nashville in the mid-1980s, Keith put in a five-year stint with Ricky Skaggs' band before joining Dolly Parton's bluegrass outfit. Keith has recently released Distant Land to Roam (Copper Creek), a stunning collection of bluegrass originals that reflect both his rural upbringing and his years spent working with the genre's masters. Keith honors a tradition that accesses the timeless well of human experience in an impeccable musical setting where every guitar lick and vocal turn is an expression of heart and soul. |
