Distinguished by the power and clarity of her voice and the richness and intensity of her delivery, the emotions of folk music, so faithfully presented by Odetta, have universal attraction -- whether it's in the lonely cry of her blues, the exultance of her work songs, the poignancy of her love ballads, or the quiet faith of her spirituals. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, her family moved to Los Angeles, where she studied opera and earned her college degree in music. From her start at San Francisco's Hungry i nightclub, accompanying herself on guitar, Odetta became one of the brightest stars of the folk music renaissance, playing Carnegie Hall and the Newport Folk Festival, touring the world, and recording more than thirty albums. Odetta has kept alive the legacy of early folk and blues singers such as Bessie Smith, and has provided inspiration for such modern performers as Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman. Tonight, Seth Farber joins on piano as the legendary singer performs songs from her 1999 Grammy nominated album, Blues Everywhere I Go, as well as selections from her recently released Lookin' for a Home, a tribute to the music and life of mid-20th Century folk and blues legend, Hudie Ledbetter, or Leadbelly, as he is familiarly known.
