legendary Hawaiian slack key guitarists & vocalists

A master of slack key guitar -- the Hawaiian finger style, in which the strings (keys) are lowered (slacked) to nonstandard tunings, producing a lingering sound and characteristic resonance -- Ledward Ka'apana blends virtuosity and a seemingly endless ability to improvise with an infectious joy for performing and a rascally sense of humor. Growing up in the village of Kalapana on the big island of Hawai'i, and inspired by his musical family, in 1977 he formed the popular band, Hui 'Ohana, with his twin brother Ned and cousin Dennis Pavao. Led's solo work and his collaborations with artists such as Bob Brozman, Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs, and Alison Krauss, have established him as one of Hawai'i's foremost musical ambassadors. Led's latest album is Black Sand (Dancing Cat). Cyril Pahinui grew up in the town of Waim¯analo on O'ahu's windward coast. His father, Gabby "Pops" Pahinui, was Hawai'i's leading slack key player, and the Pahinui home provided food, shelter, and a place to jam for the foremost musicians. Cyril began performing with his father's group at the age of twelve, playing on all five of Gabby's albums, and continuing on his own with the groundbreaking Sandwich Isle Band and with his brothers, Bla and Martin. A winner of three Na Hoku Hanohano awards (Hawai'ian Grammies), Cyril's most recent album, Four Hands Sweet and Hot, is a slack key and steel guitar collaboration with Bob Brozman
