Matt Flinner Trio
Monday, October 12, 2009
mandolin virtuoso & his hot band
Door 7:00 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $18.50

Mandolin ace Matt Flinner and his adventurous bluegrass trio present tunes from their latest recording, Music Du Jour (Compass Records), a CD that was born when Matt, guitarist Ross Martin, and bassist Eric Thorin challenged each other to write a new tune each day while on tour and perform it the same evening. Between the three, over 60 new tunes were composed during three U.S. tours, and the best of them were recorded for the CD.

A multi-instrumentalist from a very young age, Matt has made a career out of playing acoustic music in new ways. Starting out as a banjo prodigy who was playing bluegrass festivals before he entered his teens, Matt later took up the mandolin, won the banjo contest at Winfield, Kansas, in 1990, and took the mandolin award there the following year. Now based in Nashville, he is widely considered one of the hottest and most creative mandolin players on the acoustic scene. (He most recently appeared on comedian/banjo player Steve Martin's recording, The Crow.)

In the words of Bluegrass Now magazine, "Flinner provides the next logical evolutionary step to David Grisman's unique dawg style, and does it with a nod to the past and a vision of the future."
