Oh, what an opening weekend! Tonight the David Grisman Quintet helps put a shine on our beautiful new listening room with virtuoso musicianship and plentiful good vibes. In a concert that highlights the expansive potential of traditional music, the marvelous mandolin innovator and his quintet follow an opening set by wild originals, Greg Liszt & the Deadly Gentlemen.

Famed for forging his own musical path in his own inimitable way, David is known far and wide for his "dawg" music, a jubilant, highly intricate, harmonically advanced hybrid of so many different stylistic influences (swing, bluegrass, Latin, jazz, gypsy) that he had to invent the name for it. In addition to his own renowned groups like DGQ, Old and In the Way, and the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, David has recorded with everyone from the Grateful Dead to Bonnie Raitt, and many more. His quintet has spent the past several decades winning numerous awards and headlining at major jazz, folk, and bluegrass festivals around the world, while producing distinguished alumni like Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Mike Marshall, and Darol Anger. The current DGQ lineup features guitarist Grant Gordy, drummer/percussionist George Marsh, flutist Matt Eakle, and bassist Jim Kerwin.

Opening tonight's show are Greg Liszt & the Deadly Gentlemen, a group best described in Greg's own words: "Irresistible, rock-like grooves from banjo, mandolin, fiddle and acoustic bass. Cutting-edge bluegrass virtuosity. Honesty, wit and passion. Deep roots in the American acoustic tradition. Rapid and deft rap vocals." (Yes, you read that right: rap vocals.) The Deadly Gentlemen, featuring Greg on banjo and vocals, plus mandolinist Josh Pinkham, fiddler Michael Barnett, and Sam Grisman on double bass, proudly defy the stereotypes of both banjo and rap to define an organic, captivating, and totally novel approach to folk music. "Trust us, this is not what you are expecting," says Greg, who recently completed an international tour with Bruce Springsteen and a Ph. D. in Molecular Biology from MIT.
