If you notice the smell of smoke at the Freight tonight, there's a good reason: three sizzlin' divas performing the tunes of Pasty Cline—the combination is sure to be incendiary! Bay Area chanteuses Lavay Smith, Carmen Getit, and Belle Monroe join forces for a loving tribute to the country legend, presenting a wide selection of Patsy's famous songs. They are backed by an all-star band featuring Lavay's hot rhythm section plus special guest soloists including steel guitar legend Bobby Black, pianist Chris Siebert, Darrell Green on drums, and bassist Mike Zisman.
Best known as a powerful jazz vocalist, Lavay usually performs with her red-hot jump blues and swing band, The Red Hot Skillet Lickers. Her big, bluesy voice and sultry stage presence put a sizzle in any show, evoking an era of sensuous jazz queens. A musical double-threat, Carmen wrings a mean moan from her Gibson guitar as well as shoutin' the blues with her strong, soulful voice, often in the company of the popular jump-swing band, Steve Lucky & the Rhumba Bums. Familiar to many Freightgoers as the alluring frontwoman of the bluegrass outfit Belle Monroe and her Brewglass Boys and the western swing big band Lost Weekend, Belle's strong, bluesy vocal style has added a distinctive sparkle to many an S.F. folk, swing, and roots music band.
Born in Winchester, Virginia, in 1932, Patsy Cline became a mainstay on the Grand Ole Opry and climbed to the top of the country charts with classics like "Walkin' After Midnight" and "I Fall to Pieces." Her fame continued to grow after her untimely death in an airplane crash in 1963; she is indisputably one of the most influential singers in the history of American popular music.
