A beguiling traditional singer and instrumentalist from the windswept archipelago off the west coast of Scotland known as the Hebrides, Julie Fowlis has been making a stir in traditional music circles (and beyond) with her centuries-old songs and with the mesmerizing beauty and passion of her vocals. In the past several years, Julie has gathered a legion of fans and numerous awards, including Folk Singer of the Year for BBC Radio 2 in 2008 and Gaelic Singer of the Year at the 2007 Scots Trad Music Awards, where her CD cuilidh was Album of the Year.
This is particularly impressive considering that Julie sings exclusively in Scottish Gaelic, a language understood by only 60,000 people (approximately 1% of the population of Scotland). Steadfastly true to her roots in North Uist, New Hebrides, she sings in the powerful old style, as well as playing Highland bagpipes, smallpipes, whistles, oboe, and one-row melodeon.
Don't miss the rare opportunity to catch this fascinating young artist!
