"I want to put the 'Yo!' back in yodel," explains Seattle artist Laura Love, an amazing singer, songwriter, and funk bassist whose infectious, thought-provoking musical concoctions of folk, bluegrass, gospel, blues, reggae, country, and hip-deep grooves have been described as "Afro-Celtic" and "Hip-alachian."
Tonight, Laura spotlights tunes from her tenth CD, NeGrass which she describes as "a collection of original and traditional Negro spirituals, field hollers, and bluegrass music."
She's joined for the show by Orville Johnson, whose soulful dobro and slide guitar playing augment the intense power of Laura's chant-filled, funk-inflected songs.
With legions of adoring fans throughout the music festival and club circuit in the United States and Canada, Laura's music has attracted a powerful grassroots following, and has regularly been included in Billboard magazine's annual top ten lists; she was also included in Utne Reader's 2003 "Artists Who Will Shake the World."
Born in 1953 in Illinois, Orville, a regular performer on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion radio program, grew up playing everything from blues to bluegrass. After relocating to Seattle in the late 1970s, he became a founding member of the much-loved folk/rock group, the Dynamic Logs, where he was known for his hot licks and vocal acrobatics.
