John Schott's Dream Kitchen ensemble returns to the Freight to celebrate the release of their new CD, Drunken Songs for Sober Times. Drawing on famous and obscure compositions by Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, and Scott Joplin, Dream Kitchen plays New Orleans and early jazz with a raw and rowdy energy that's mighty hard to resist. The trio makes the most of every inch of stage space with tuba, bass trombone, jug, electric guitar, resophonic guitar, fretless banjo, drums, and plenty of ethnic percussion, too. And if you thought things couldn't possibly get any spicier, just add John's vocal stylings on unforgettable songs like "I Can Tell by the Way You Smell," "Let's Get Drunk and Truck," and "I'm Certainly Living a Ragtime Life."
John Schott (guitar and voice) has released CDs on Tzadik, Songlines, New World, Knitting Factory, and Smash The State. With the groups T.J. Kirk and Junk Genius, he has been a frequent visitor at jazz festivals throughout the world. Marc Bolin (tuba, bass trombone, and jug) plays in at least 11 different Bay Area bands, including the Paradigm Brass Ensemble, the Marcus Shelby Orchestra, and Dream Kitchen. He is currently editing and completing Duke Ellington's lost opera, "Queenie Pie," for the Oakland Opera. John Hanes (drums) is well known to Bay Area audiences from his countless performances over the past 30 years, ranging from Brenda Boykin to Henry Kaiser.
