As anyone who saw them perform at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in 2005 and 2006 knows, Steve Smith and Bill Evans make some mighty fine music, both separately and together. Tonight's performance features solo and duo playing from both, so come on in, curl up with a cup of peppermint tea, and enjoy!
A multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer, Steve has been performing for over 20 years in a wide range of musical situations, from hard-driving traditional bluegrass—his first love—to new acoustic, Celtic, jazz ensembles, and chamber music. Steve's compositions reflect the many influences on his life, from his origins in Virginia to his current home in the desert of Las Cruces, New Mexico; tonight he'll surely also include numbers from his new CD, Hard Road, accompanying himself on mandolin, mandola, and guitar.
In the words of Sing Out magazine, "There are a handful of banjoists who are moving the tradition forward while keeping it close to the heart. Bill Evans is just such a player." Bill has spent several decades applying what he learned from masters like Sonny Osborne, J. D. Crowe, and Tony Trischka in an original fusion of old and new approaches. He performs with a host of excellent groups, from Rustler's Moon to his duo show with Jody Stecher, "The Secret Life of Banjos."
