In this musical tribute to the legendary vocalist, saxophonist, and band leader Louis Jordan, Bay Area harmonica ace Phil Berkowitz presents an evening of music from the man who made the blues jump. Featuring selections from his CD, Phil Berkowitz Plays Louis' Blues, Phil and his hot band are on a mission to re-introduce Jordan's famed music, high energy, and sly humor to the world. Phil's efforts could not have come at a more appropriate time—2008 is the centennial anniversary of Louis Jordan's birthday on July 8th, 1908 in Brinkley, Arkansas.
A blues harpist and a dynamic vocalist, Phil has been bringing his unique and energetic musical style to Bay Area audiences for the better part of a decade alongside folks like Danny Caron and Brenda Boykin, as well as with his own band, The High Rollers. For his Louis Jordan show, Phil seized the idea of translating Jordan's jazzy, blues-soaked saxophone riffs to red-hot diatonic harmonica.
Marvin Greene (guitar), William Beatty (piano), Bing Nathan (upright bass) and Bowen Brown (drums) join Phil for a great selection of Jordan hits like "Caldonia," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby," plus lesser-known gems, covering every stylistic era of the jump blues legend's long career.
