classical Indian and East/West fusion music featuring Maestro Matthew Montfort and Pandit Habib Khan
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $18.50

East meets West with seamless fire and grace as famed guitarist Matthew Montfort and sitar master Pandit Habib Khan join forces for an evening of unique jugalbandi (a classical North Indian musical duet, literally "tied together"). Deft arrangements and elegant instrumental interplay mark performances by these two virtuosos of "world fusion music," combining their deep knowledge of classical Indian music with a vision of a musical world without borders.

Matthew, who has led Ancient Future in its various configurations since the 1960s, is a pioneer player of the scalloped fretboard guitar—an instrument combining qualities of the plucked South Indian vina and the steel string guitar. Matthew will also be debuting the recently developed Glissentar fretless 11 string guitar.

Described by Beirut's L'Orient Le Jour newspaper as the "Jimi Hendrix of the sitar," Habib Khan is regarded as one of the world's leading players of the instrument. He was born into a family of musicians in central India, and began his training at the age of five under his accomplished father, Ustad Hameed Jaffer Khan. Now a Bay Area resident, Habib has developed a distinct style that combines traditional techniques and his own imaginative inventions.

Arshad Syed (tabla and santur) accompanies the duo.
