The renaissance in Hawaiian traditional music has seen a new, vibrant generation emerge; tonight's stellar lineup offers fresh perspectives and abundant energy, while honoring generations of artists gone before.
Producer of the Grammy Award-winning CD Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Vol. 1 (he plays on it, too) Daniel Ho is a composer and multi-instrumentalist engaged in many different genres of music. He has won three Na Hoku Hanohano (Hawaiian Grammy) awards and eight Hawaii music awards, ranging from jazz to slack key to religious Hawaiian music.
A soulful, strongly atmospheric guitarist and a wonderfully expressive singer, Keoki Kahumoku grew up on the Big Island of Hawai'i surrounded by music in the home of his father, George Kahumoku, Jr., from whom he learned the traditional "slack-key" style, a fingerpicking technique where the guitar strings are loosened, producing a unique lingering, resonant sound.
Herb Ohta, Jr., son of the legendary 'ukulele virtuoso Herb "Ohta-San" Ohta, learned his first tune on the 'ukulele at the tender age of three, and he hasn't slowed down since then.
