Look out, it's time to bust out and cut loose with the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention! Kicking off the festivities in fine style tonight with some of the most soul-stirring music around are famed Appalachian singer, Ginny Hawker superlative traditional duo, Jody Stecher & Hank Bradley, and with San Francisco-based string band, Mercury Dimes.

One of today's finest old-time Appalachian-style singers, Ginny Hawker transports listeners with her powerful, goosebump-raising voice and old songs wrapped in stories of the people and places from which her music springs. Born in Halifax County, Virginia, Ginny grew up singing in a large extended family of singers and musicians, and continues to honor their art. Also known for her duo work with the New Lost City Ramblers' Tracy Schwarz, Ginny's repertoire stretches from the beautiful unaccompanied ballads of the south to early bluegrass and gospel to the songs of The Carter Family.

A familiar face at the Freight, Jody Stecher is a remarkable, expressive singer, a skilled multi-instrumentalist, and a fount of traditional music knowledge. Jody is also known for his work in the bluegrass band Perfect Strangers, with Bill Evans in "The Secret Life of Banjos" and with Kate Brislin, with whom he received two Grammy nominations. No slouch himself when it comes to versatility, Hank Bradley fiddles with the Mountain Ramblers of Galax, Virginia, plays Croatian tamburitsa and violin with Ruze Dalmatinke of Seattle, and provides violin and bouzouki at various Greek community functions. Jody and Hank have played together many a time, on stage as well as on CDs like Jody's acclaimed collection of traditional ballads, Oh the Wind and Rain (Appleseed).

Getting the evening off to a rousing start is San Francisco string band, Mercury Dimes. A sextet with a dynamic, twin-fiddle driven sound, the band sets Appalachian fiddle music firmly at the heart of its musical inspiration, while also boasting a fiery repertoire of bluegrass ballads and country-blues gems.
