A dazzling lineup featuring many of our musical friends graces our stage to help celebrate the Freight's 38th anniversary. Singer-songwriter Phil Marsh will host this evening's the event joined by many of his cohorts from the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle band, including Annie "Dynamite" Johnston. The evening also spotlights two performers from the Freight's more recent years, acoustic blues ace David Jacobs-Strain and alternative-country singer-songwriter Audrey Auld Mezera.

Phil Marsh sang and picked his guitar with the Cleanliness & Godliness Skiffle Band at the 1968 opening night of the Freight and Salvage. Phil also performed with the street theater ensemble, the East Bay Sharks, was musical director for the Pickle Family Circus, wrote songs for the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and helped create the infamous Masked Marauders superstar spoof album. Since those days, Phil re-located to New York City where he has enjoying success as a club and studio performer. Phil returns to his Berkeley origins tonight as he ranges from folk and country to blues and originals, joined by former skifflers, Annie "Dynamite" Johnston, Richard Saunders, and Gary Salzman, and others from his multi-faceted career as one of the vital forces in American roots music.

With over a decade of performing experience and five albums to his credit, youthful acoustic bluesman David Jacobs-Strain has made a name for himself by combining a deep knowledge of the Delta blues with his own old soul to create intensely authentic music. He is a powerhouse finger-picking and bottleneck-slide guitar virtuoso, a raw, soulful vocalist, and an insightful songwriter to boot; and quite definitely one of the premier young blues artists in the United States.

Tasmania-born Audrey Auld Mezera, who started out working with Australian country music legend Bill Chambers, serves up vivid character-driven stories of heartbreak and heroes. “Music with the dirt left on" is how she describes her alt-country tunes, which recently won her top honors in MerleFest's prestigious Chris Austin Song Contest. Whether humorous or poignant, Audrey's songs always carry the ring of truth, and they're delivered with a beautiful, soulful voice and great stage presence.

Also appearing this evening will be long-time skiffler associate, clown, comic, and violinist, Geoff Hoyle, of Cirque du Soleil fame. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Geoff "One of the great and unique performers of our time, who raises clowning to new heights, achieving a non-gravitational state of airborne brilliance, reinventing, refining and blending mimicry, mime and monologue, maybe magic, so seamlessly devised."

Help us celebrate 38 years and join us for a great night.
