A soulful storyteller, Eliza Gilkyson blends her folk roots with a pop-influenced passion for compelling melodies and a penchant for writing intelligent, deeply personal lyrics, weaving her tales with a delicate voice full of tough vulnerability. A strong streak of social and political consciousness runs through Eliza's work, where piercing imagery and razor-sharp words are couched in gorgeous melodies memorable enough to win her a Grammy nomination in the Contemporary Folk category for her 2004 CD, Land of Milk and Honey.
Poets and musicians are prominent in Eliza's family lineage, her father is the late folksinger and Hollywood studio composer, Terry Gilkyson, known for his 1950s hit with the Easy Riders, "All Day, All Night, Marianne," and his Grammy-nominated songs for Disney Studios, such as "The Bear Necessities," and her brother Tony is a well known rock and folk guitarists whose credits include stints with Dave Alvin, the renowned punk band, X, and Eliza herself.
Tonight Eliza showcases songs from her recent Paradise Hotel (Red House), drawing on gospel, blues, and folk rock to expand her exquisite repertoire with songs that the Austin Chronicle described as "Tender and cathartic to the point of jubilation." She's joined for the performance by longtime musical cohorts, Cisco Ryder on percussion and Mike Hardwick on guitar.
