Tonight's Berkeley Old Time Music Convention show, featuring the
convention's guest of honor, celebrated folk revivalist, Mike Seeger, plus
master mandolinist and fiddler, Kenny Hall, with his band and Berkeley's
own dynamic duo, Eric & Suzy Thompson. This evening is guaranteed to
plant a grin on your face and a song in your heart!
Mike Seeger
has devoted his life to singing and playing the traditional music of the
rural American South. With a rich repertoire of ballads, topical blues, and
dance tunes, and his astonishing instrumental versatility on guitar, fiddle,
banjo, pan pipes, autoharp, jaw harp, harmonica, dulcimer, and more, Mike
illuminates the roots of American folk music. His authentic renditions
convey the full depth of feeling, sheer energy, and infinite variety of the
music. A powerful figure in the traditional folk revival, along with his
sister Peggy and brother Pete, Mike is the recipient of grants and awards
from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Smithsonian Research
Fellowship Program, the Guggenheim Foundation, and The Grateful Dead's
Rex Foundation.
Born blind in 1923, Kenny Hall is a master
mandolinist and fiddler in the old-time music styles of the southeastern
rural U.S., with an enormous repertoire that also ranges through other
parts of the U.S., Ireland, Mexico, Latin America, and many parts of
Europe -- it's said that Kenny remembers every piece of music he's ever
learned. An energetic and passionate performer, Kenny plays with a
driving vigor that is utterly infectious, and he tells amazing stories, too.
Known for his round-the-clock jam sessions, Kenny is a beloved mentor
for several generations of West Coast old-time musicians. Tonight, he's
joined by his band for some memorable music-making.
