The aptly-named Ahenk ("harmony") Duo represents the musical union of
two young classical Turkish master musicians, Murat Aydemir on tanbur
(long-necked lute) and Derya Trkan on classical kemene (small 3-
stringed Turkish violin). Performing well-known works of virtuoso Turkish
composers, the duo highlights pieces by Tanburi Cemil Bey, Udi Serif
Muhittin Targan, and Tanburi Necip Gulses in concert and on their recent
eponymous album.
The pair has been widely praised for their
profound and deeply felt performances, and their superb solo and duo
takasim (improvisations). Murat Aydemir, who aims to preserve
traditional tanbur performance methods while expanding and introducing
new ideas, has played with the prestigious Istanbul Government Turkish
Music Ensemble since 1988, as well as in Incesaz, a groundbreaking trio
that focuses on his original compositions. A master of classical Turkish
kemene, Derya Turkan is equally proficient in improvisational playing and
the Ottoman classical music repertoire. Also a member of Incesaz, he has
performed around the world, alongside various master musicians and with
the Istanbul National Turkish Music Ensemble.
