Both the name of a 2003 album and an affiliation of three acclaimed singer-songwriters, Redbird combines the formidable talents of Kris Delmhorst, Peter Mulvey, and Jeffrey Foucault in an evening of music that they call "A love letter to American song." The three swap traditional tunes, old jazz standards, country songs, and numbers that blur the line between forms. They'll be sure also to add a generous handful of their own, plus great songs from the likes of Greg Brown, REM, and Willie Nelson.
Combining a poetic imagination and an alluring, rootsy mixture of folk, gospel, and country styles, Cambridge-based Kris Delmhorst plays what she describes as "songs with pavement under their feet, dirt under their fingernails, and sometimes out of sight of land altogether."
Boston-based Peter Mulvey distills funk, folk, and rock influences into songs that are dark, lyrical, and ethereal. With a startling guitar style, a smooth, husky voice, and resonant lyrics, he weaves together a truly riveting performance.
Wisconsinite Jeffrey Foucault specializes in dark narrative ballads, starkly rendered love songs, allegories, and elegies told in plain verse, embellished with his richly-toned fingerstyle work and poetic economy.
