Innovative banjo virtuoso and composer, Alison Brown is known for
pushing the instrument out of its familiar Appalachian settings and into
new musical territory. Acclaimed for her wide-ranging musical sensibilities,
Alison has a unique style that encompasses bluegrass, jazz, folk, and Celtic
roots.
After honing her chops as a teenager in Southern California
performing with fiddler Stuart Duncan, Alison began making her mark on
the national bluegrass scene in 1989, when she joined Alison Krauss'
band, Union Station, then won bluegrass music's highest accolade for an
instrumentalist: the International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player
of the Yearin 1991. A Grammy nomination for Alison's first solo album,
Simple Pleasures, was soon followed by a Grammy for Best Country
Instrumental Performance for a track on her third album, Fair
Weather.
In1995, Alison founded the acclaimed, eclectic
label, Compass Records, and the hits just keep on coming: most recently
last month's release, Stolen Moments.
